6 Great Snacks to Pack for the Plane

Category: Nutrition, Reviews

Flying can be stressful. You’re scrambling to get to the airport early enough and moving as fast as possible to beat the clock while making sure you have everything you need.

On top of the anxiety, flying is expensive. And it’s not just the tickets; it’s also the food! But the prices aren’t the only negative aspects of airline food. You’re also limited on options, which can be problematic if you have little kids. We know how picky they can be!

If you’re trying to save some money and you want more options, you’ll most likely consider bringing your own snacks for the flight. Here’s how that works.

Can I Eat My Own Snacks on a Plane?

The quick answer is yes, you can bring your own snacks onto a plane. There are some stipulations to keep in mind, though. Here’s what the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has to say about it:

“Solid food items (not liquids or gels) can be transported in either your carry-on or checked bags. Liquid or gel food items larger than 3.4 oz are not allowed in carry-on bags and should be placed in your checked bags if possible.”

Airlines are mostly cool with you bringing food onto a flight, but it’s best to stick with dry items. Having your own snacks will give you more choices and possibly better nutrition if that’s your goal.

What Foods Should I Not Bring on the Plane?

Beyond the TSA’s written rules, there are some unspoken rules to respect as well. If you’re bringing snacks onto an airplane, please don’t bring:

  • Super messy foods. You know, like those treats with a candy stick that you dip into sugar dust. Don’t make things harder for the staff than it needs to be!
  • Smelly foods. Hardboiled eggs or garlic bread might seem like a good idea in theory, but there’s no need to stink up the flight for other passengers!
  • Yogurt. The main reason to avoid yogurt is that it can make a mess due to pressure changes. The container can also get smelly when it’s sitting out after you’ve eaten the yogurt.

What Foods are Airplane-Friendly?

Now that we’ve got the rules and should-nots out of the way, let’s focus on the good stuff. Snacks! If you’re looking for airplane-friendly snacks to pack ahead of time, here are some fun options.

Lorissa’s Kitchen Original Beef Sticks

Space is limited in a carry-on bag. The more portable a snack is the better, and mini beef sticks embody that convenience. They’re individually wrapped and weigh less than an ounce, so you can pack them in pretty much any bag.

But convenience isn’t the only reason to bring these beef sticks. They have a crave-able, savory flavor and are made with 100% grass-fed beef while containing 4 grams of protein per serving.

Granola

Wholesome with a light amount of sweetness, granola is a popular choice that comes in a variety of flavors. Everything from vanilla to honey to chocolate is possible.

People like to eat granola by itself or as an add-on or topping for other foods. For example, you can add it to nuts and raisins for a tasty trail mix. Be careful, though; granola can get messy toward the end of the bag as the pieces get tiny.

Dried Fruit

When you want something sweet that still has good nutritional value, dried fruit is a winner. Dried apples, bananas, apricots and many other fruits are sold pre-packaged, or you can save some money by buying them in bulk and bagging them yourself!

Muffins

Sometimes you want something homemade when you’re traveling. Muffins are a filling, comforting snack you can make quickly at home before leaving for your trip.

They can be sweet like blueberry or chocolate chip, or they can be savory and feature ingredients like bacon and cheese. If you’re homesick or simply craving something decadent, muffins hit the mark.

Cookies

For a lot of us, junk food is necessary during travel. It’s especially true if you’re flying with family and people get restless and chippy with each other. In these moments, a nice chocolate chip cookie can give you a quick mental break.

Cookies are mood-changing treats. You can be having a bad moment, take a bite out of a cookie and feel yourself start to lighten up and smile. Even better, you can make a batch of them at home and save money.

Protein Bars

Back to the individually-wrapped category, protein bars are a convenient snack that can make a big impact. Depending on which ones you choose, protein bars can be under 100 calories or nearly 300 calories.

But beyond being a filling product in a small package, protein bars also give the benefit of variety. Flavors often include oatmeal and peanut butter but also extend into dessert profiles like birthday cake and fudge brownies.
